Bed bug identification

Bed bugs are generally small with a flat body. This allows them to hide in plain sight when they are not looking for food. The most common places they hide in are the seams of the mattress, headboards, bedding, furniture, and carpets. You do not need to find a bed bug to know you have an infestation. They leave tiny brown and red stains on surfaces when they are crushed. You might also see some black and brown spots in on your mattress indicating the presence of bed bugs.

One fertile female is all your home needs for it to get infested. A healthy female bed bug can reproduce up to 500 eggs during her lifetime and up to 5 eggs a day. Bed bug infestation is extremely high, and should you notice an infestation, leave the area and contact a professional Pest Control agent to remove them permanently.

Did You Know: Bed bugs can go without feeding for up to a year? A bug can feed up to 8 minutes on a human and simply crawl away without you even noticing.

Eco-Smart Pest Control categorizes these pests as the best hitchhikers out there. They are transported by humans. Think of the holiday you have just returned from. You were in a different bed, travelled for hours by car or plane. This is the perfect time for them to just on board (your bags) and hitch a ride to their new home. Remember if they are not treated and removed properly, they will move to other areas of your home and the infestation will spread.

How to get rid of them?

  • Keep your mattress covered up to a year to make sure all bugs in the mattress are dead
  • Tumble dry your entire wardrobe
  • Remove all dirt and junk around the bed area
  • Kill them with heat such as steam
  • Regularly wash and tumble-dry your bedding and clothes as the heat will kill them
  • Simply contact Eco-Smart Pest Control

Do not attempt to treat the bed bug problem on your own, as pesticides purchased in stores can only make the problem worse than it already is. Bed bugs will now sense the chemicals and will run away, causing them to spread to other areas of your house, making the problem worse. While waiting for a pest control agent, a few tips includes using a steamer on the bed (if you have not identified the problem 100%, then don’t steam your mattress). You are more than welcome to vacuum the mattress in the meantime, but still call a Professional Pest Control agent because the vacuum will not pick up all the eggs stuck in the mattress. If you’re worried that clothes are infected, stick them in the tumble dryer (if you have one).

Don’t wait for an infestation to happen before acting and protecting your family.
