Say Cheese or should you say Disease? Rats can be very harmful to your health. As mentioned in previous blogs, rat bites and scratches can result in disease and rat-bite fever. Rat urine is responsible for the spread of Leptospirosis. It can also be contracted through handling or inhalation of rat dropping and urine odors. Complications include renal and liver failure, as well as cardiovascular problems.
Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
One of the most dangerous diseases is the bubonic plague, aka “Black Plague,” and its variants. The disease is transmitted when fleas from the rats bite human beings. From the transmission of bubonic plague to Hantavirus, rat infestations can prove harmful and dangerous to you and your family’s health. They also are a carrier and producers of various allergens in your home environment. Their droppings, and shed hair can cause you to sneeze and experience other allergic reactions.
Hantavirus: People become infected through contact with hantavirus-infected rodents or their urine and droppings which can be fatal.
